Education

Graduated from Clarke University in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in English, writing minor. GPA: 3.4/4.0 I was most of the way to a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology when I graduated; I did not have the financial means to continue attending school to complete this degree, but I am in the process of applying to Lakeland College's MA in Counseling program.

Experience

During my four years as an undergraduate student at Clarke, I worked as a writing tutor in the library. It was through this experience that I discovered my love for tutoring. I have eight years of experience as a writing tutor and have held numerous editorial positions over the years, including being the lead copyeditor for my college's literary magazine during its innaugural year (when I was a senior). At age 19 (while juggling a full 15-credit course load and two part-time work-study jobs), I started my own column in my hometown's newspaper on mental illness stigma; I was later recognized by the Iowa division of Mental Health America. I've done a fair amount of freelance writing for a variety of media in areas ranging from public relations to fiction and creative nonfiction. I placed second in my college's writing contest as a freshman, placed first with one honorable mention as a junior, and placed second with two honorable mentions my senior year.

Hobbies

I'm definitely a linguaphile! I spend a lot of time thinking about word etymology, development of slang, and so on. I'm fluent in Spanish and have been speaking it for twelve years. I'm also teaching myself Russian (my third language). I love the written word and will read just about anything. It's not uncommon for me to read two or three books at a time; my current list includes one of my old Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy textbooks, "Prince Lestat" by Anne Rice, and "On the Run" by Alice Goffman. I'm also an avid writer and maintain a blog devoted to educating others about mental illness, sharing my experiences, and working to make others aware of and break down the stigma. I enjoy sewing, cross-stitch, playing the piano, and taking long walks around the pond at my apartment complex.
